The new year starts with resolutions for many people, for some this will mean losing unrealistic amounts of weight, going to the gym every night or never looking at another carb again! But we all know that these are unsustainable new years resolutions. There really is no big secret when it comes good healthy living. Here are a few things you can do to ensure you start the new year in the right way.

Get your 5 a day

Have you heard of the '5 a day' recommendation? Well nearly 70% of Brits struggle to eat that many a day. Make you always have fruit and veg in the house and in your office so you can snack on it regularly, also try incorporating it into every meal. Why not invest in a juicer or a blender and make delicious and healthy smoothies and juices?

Weigh in

Nearly a third of women and nearly half of men in the UK are overweight, being overweight can reduce your life expectancy by around nine years! Shocking, right? You should use a BMI calculator to find your healthy weight and then check your weight regularly, if you need to lose weight you'll find everything you need in our healthy living and weight management section, from meal supplements to vitamins, we have it all.

Move more

Exercise should be a part of your daily routine, it's not just something to do when you want to lose weight. Exercise is proven to release endorphins also known as happy hormones and lower the risk of developing major diseases by up to 50%, these include, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Exercise doesn't have to be boring, join a class like boxercise, zumba or aqua aerobics for a fun alternative to the gym.

Ditch salt and fat

Overloading on fat and salt is another cause of chronic illness, too much salt can make you up to three times more likely to have a stroke or develop heart disease, because too much salt results in high blood pressure. Try to cut the amount of salt and fat that you have in your diet – this can be done by choosing healthier options like fruit and veg instead of fried foods that are laden in saturated fats and added salt.

Say no to smoke

It's a known fact that smoking dramatically reduces your life expectancy, therefore it's time to ditch the habit and go smoke free! If you quit smoking the health benefits are almost instant, after just twenty minutes your pulse and blood pressure will return to a stable rate, after just 1 day your lungs start to clear and after a couple of days smoke free your breathing with get easier and you'll have loads more energy. And most importantly, in the long run you're adding years onto your life. For support while quitting why not try an electronic cigarette to ease yourself off the nicotine gradually, we stock a full range of electronic cigarettes and gamucci cartomisers to help you kick the habit for good.
